A Barcelona Apartment With A Mediterranean Vibe
Located in one of the main avenues in the vibrant city of Barcelona, this 70 m2 apartment encapsulates the essence of the Mediterranean sea by playing with colours and materials inspired by Nature.
Its owners wanted to maximise the available space, increasing the sense of spaciousness and bringing natural light to those rooms that didn’t have windows.
The project was commissioned to Spanish interior designer Meritxell Ribe. Many walls were knocked down to connect rooms and make the space look bigger and brighter.
The kitchen was opened to the living and dining area by replacing one of the walls with a natural wood benchtop to create a functional breakfast area. This solution also allowed the kitchen getting natural light from the living space.
The second bedroom was converted into a flexible space that could function as study room or guest bedroom, and connected to the living area through a double sliding door.
The main bedroom is a gorgeous space with an intimate and tranquil feel. Instead of a visually heavy headboad the bed head was crowned with a leaf patterned wallpaper.
An en-suite bathroom and walking wardrobe were incorporated into the main bedroom and visually connected by a glass wall, allowing the natural light coming into the bathroom.
Designer’s tricks to learn
1. Creating a sense of calm and tranquility
A soothing colour scheme of blues, neutrals and whites, inspired by the colours of the Mediterranean coast, gives consistency to the apartment and connects indoors with its surrounding environment. Rugs, cushions and a few other accessories introduce some pops of colour to brighten up the space.
2. Adding balance through colours and materials
Blues and whites bring a sense of freshness while textiles, natural wood finishes and grass-cloth wallpaper add warmth and comfort.
3. A clever furniture selection
The tight space in this apartment required a selection of curved shaped furniture to make easier to move around the room. Sharp corners were avoided in tables and chairs.
4. Creating a sense of rhythm
The extra long curtains that cover the living room and bedroom large windows add a sense of rhythm and repetition. That effect is also achieved through the paneled doors in the hallway and walking wardrobe.
This beautiful apartment is a master example of how a clever space planning and designer tricks can make a tiny space look bigger and brighter.

Un apartamento en Barcelona de aire Mediterráneo
Situado en una zona céntrica de Barcelona, este apartamento captura en sus 70 m2 la esencia mediterránea mediante una acertada combinación de colores y materiales inspirados en el entorno natural.
Sus propietarios querían aprovechar al máximo el espacio disponible, y conseguir mayor amplitud y luminosidad en aquellas habitaciones sin ventanas.
El proyecto de interiorismo fue llevado a cabo por el estudio de Meritxell Ribé. Durante el proceso de renovación se eliminaron varios tabiques para conectar espacios y ampliar visualmente el interior.
La cocina se abrió al salón eliminando el tabique que los separaba y reemplazándolo por una funcional barra de desayuno que ayuda a delimitar el espacio. De esta manera, la cocina, antes oscura, recibe ahora la luz natural del salón.
Un dormitorio fue convertido en un práctico estudio/habitación de invitados, integrándose en el salón para dar a este mayor amplitud, a la vez que se puede separar del mismo mediante dos puertas correderas.
El dormitorio principal es un espacio intimo y acogedor. En lugar de utilizarse en él un cabecero éste fue reemplazado por un precioso papel pintado con un delicado diseño botánico.
El baño y el vestido se conectan visualmente mediante una pared de cristal que permite la entrada de la luz natural desde el dormitorio hasta el baño sin encontrar a su paso barreras arquitectónicas.

Sensación de calma y tranquilidad
Una paleta de tonalidades sosegadas en azul, blanco y tonos arena, e inspirada en los colores de la costa mediterránea, dan consistencia al interior del apartamento y continuidad con su entorno natural.

Los tonos azules y blancos aportan frescura al interior, mientras que tejidos, acabados de madera natural y papel pintado de lino otorgan calidez y confort.

Acertada selección de mobiliario
El reducido espacio de este apartamento requería una cuidada selección de piezas de mobiliario de líneas curvadas para facilitar el paso sin entorpecerse con esquinas puntiagudas de mesas y sillas.

Sensación rítmica
Las cortinas extra largas que cubren los grandes ventanales del salón y el dormitorio crean una sensación de ritmo y repetición. El mismo efecto se consigue también a través del paneleado de puertas de armario y la puerta de la entrada principal.
Este bello apartamento en un ejemplo magistral de cómo una planificación acertada y algunos trucos de diseño pueden ampliar visualmente el espacio y dotarlo de mayor luminosidad.
